Funcom: Revenue, Outsourcing, and More Dissappointment…

It has certainly not been a good few months for Funcom, and according to the company, the situation is expected to get worse. After September’s notice of layoffs of 20% of the company’s workforce, we received further news that the upcoming MMO, The Secret World, would also be delayed by at least several months. Age of Conan and Anarchy Online are allegedly unaffected by the downsizing.

Age of Conan, alongside several other titles, is in the middle of a furious campaign to gain long term subscribers to their title (Because, as I say time and time again, it’s all about retention rate), bringing in heavy discounts for multi-month packages, veteran rewards, and more. Age of Conan has an expansion pack in the works, while Anarchy Online has its major graphics upgrade.

Stargate Worlds: I Don’t Want To Go On The Cart…

Stargate Worlds is akin to the Duke Nukem Forever of the MMO world. Under approximately eight lawsuits currently, ranging from not paying employees to angry investors, to allegations of a ponzi scheme, the development of the oft-delayed Stargate Worlds can regularly be seen trudging along in a direct path towards nowhere.

Looking through my own archives, all of the news on MMO Fallout related to Stargate Worlds follows a similar point: A frantic, arm waving “We’re not dead yet!” directly removed from one of the early scenes in Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie. Fallout MMO: New Screenshots

I realized shortly after creating MMO Fallout that the blog would attract some disappointed looks from people who came here under the impression that this was a fansite for a Fallout MMORPG, so it always makes me giddy when I get a chance to report on the actual Fallout MMO, codename Project V13.

To bring you up to speed, not much has happened since my last article on the Fallout MMO, and the legal battle between Interplay and Bethesda. Interplay sold the rights of the Fallout franchise to Bethesda, although Interplay retained the rights to create an MMO on the grounds that the company actually be developing actively. Earlier this year, Bethesda sued Interplay, claiming that the company did not keep up its end of the deal, and in order to gain the rights to create a Fallout MMO. Interplay claims that they are indeed working on a title.

More Layoffs Hit Mythic

Eek! Mythic has been hit yet again by the downsizing hammer, as a massive downsizing at Electronic Arts (1,500 employees by April) hits the developer hard: 40% of their employees. According to twitter feeds from ex-employees, Mythic has laid off about 80 employees, approximately 40% of the Warhammer Online developer crew.

This news is not going to do anything good for confidence in Mythic’s Warhammer Online, especially when another MMO is set to go under this January (Dungeon Runners) due to continuous cutbacks of staff leading to eventual cancellation.

Depending on who you ask, many will tell you that this is a sign that Warhammer is dying. To say this is a sign is to say the sky getting dimmer is a sign that the sun is going down. You are correct, but we already knew that. Warhammer Online has been spiraling since it launched last year, and to remind people of “imminent doom” is just to beat a dead horse.

So is this a bad sign for Mythic? Obviously, and MMO Fallout will be watching WAR’s development over the next several months to see what effect layoffs will have on the game, and whether or not the content will suffer.

Aion: 1 Million Copies, CAPTCHA, Patches

The good news just keeps on rolling in for Aion, with NCsoft announcing that the title has reached nearly 1 million copies sold in North America and Europe. 600,000 of the copies come post release, we all remember Aion’s boasted four hundred thousand copies preordered. North America accounted for over half of the copies sold since Aion launched in September.

Where Aion has not excelled recently is in the most recent patch, whose community response can be summed up with a “…” Although experience rewards have been boosted in several areas, the community is lashing back against a new CAPTCHA system that randomly debuffs players during gathering that is removed by typing in a random word that displays on screen. The new system is set up to stop bots, an issue that has been plaguing Aion since launch. Players have also issued complaints that the patch did not address the main problems affecting the game.

So, good news this week for Aion and bad news as well.

My encyclopedic, borderline obsessive compulsive brain allows me to notice trends and related material, even if I can’t exactly remember when it happened or what that related material is (if my brain was encyclopedic, no one bothers to put the books back in alphabetical order, and someone keeps drawing on the pages). So when I saw that Funcom has been given a grant for development on a new MMO, I had to check my own archives to make sure I wasn’t having a brain related event, or confusing companies.

Lo and behold, I find it quickly: Not only quickly, but because it happened just in the past couple of months. In late September, Funcom announced that they were laying off 20% of their workforce. The company’s move to Montreal not only resulted in a downsizing, but I couldn’t help wondering at the time if firing one in five employees would cause disruption to the company’s two live titles (Age of Conan and Anarchy Online) and their title in production: The Secret World.

Dungeons and Dragons Online: MORE SERVER!

Thank you, Mark. What Mark Jacobs, Vice President over at Mythic Entertainment is trying to say is that success in an MMO can usually be seen by looking at whether or not the company is adding servers. Earlier in September, as we all know by now, Turbine turbine’d Dungeons and Dragons Online into a free to play game, with pay to play subscriptions as well as a microtransaction system. After the game relaunched, Turbine noted a 40% increase in subscriptions.

Well, Mark Jacobs can eat his heart out. Turbine will be opening a new server to deal with the incoming flood of players.

Like the rest of us, MMOs are born, they live, and eventually they all die. Although 2009 has seen the passing of Richard Garriot’s Tabula Rasa, Shadowbane, and The Matrix Online, it has also seen the continuing run of Ultima Online (celebrating twelve years), Everquest (ten years), and now Asheron’s Call hitting ten years old. Sadly, we celebrate this over the death of Asheron’s Call 2, that occurred less than four years ago.

Happy birthday Asheron’s Call! Have a seat…no, not there, that’s the chair that hurts your back. Sit in your rocking chair, right over there. You old coot you.

I think he just fell asleep.
