Darkfall reboot set to outlive original run.
The Darkfall reboot Rise of Agon is celebrating its three year anniversary today and the team at Big Picture Games is elated to be celebrating such a milestone. Launched in 2017, Rise of Agon takes the mold of Darkfall Online as launched by Aventurine in 2009 and takes it in their own direction. You can find videos on Youtube showcasing the changes made over the years and they are pretty extensive.
It’s been 3 years since we launched Rise of Agon and next month marks 5 years since the start of our humble project(Originally called DFO Returns for anyone who has been here that long!) to bring back this game we love into active development. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the support of this amazing community going into 5 years with a promising future for our labour of love.
Darkfall Online launched in 2009 by Aventurine and crashed hard for multiple reasons. In 2012 Darkfall shut down and in 2013 Aventurine launched Darkfall Unholy Wars which ran up to 2016 when it too shut down. Despite no longer capable of developing games, Aventurine licensed out the Darkfall game to other companies looking to keep it going.
Rise of Agon is one of two games to come from Darkfall Online’s ultimate cancellation, with the other being Darkfall: New Dawn. Darkfall: New Dawn has since went bankrupt and shut down.
