The disgraced ex-senator leaves his halfway house.
American criminal and former California State Senator Leland Yee will be entering back into the public domain next month following a five year prison sentence. Gamers may know Leland Yee most clearly from his sponsorship of California bill AB1179 in 2005 passed by Governor Schwarzenegger. The bill banned the sale of violent video games to anyone under the age of 18 and required clear labeling beyond the existing ESRB rating system. Yee, a staunch anti-gun activist and former child psychologist, believed that a link existed between violence in video games and violence in real life.
Following a long court battle with various video game lobbies, the Supreme Court ruled that violent video games are protected free speech. In 2015 Leland Yee was arrested and charged with accepting bribes to influence legislation, as well as conspiring to deal firearms without a license and to illegally import weapons from the Philippines. Yes the “violent games are bad” anti-gun Senator was working with a separatist group in the Philippines to illegally import and sell guns in the United States.
Yee pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering and was sentenced to five years. Earlier this year in February the court moved Yee out of prison and into a halfway house. According to inmate records obtained by MMO Fallout, Yee’s location is still listed as the Sacramento Residential Reentry Management office with a release date of 6/26/2020. He is 71 years old.
