World of Warcraft: Say Goodbye To Paid Gender Swaps In Shadowlands

You’ll be free to be who you want to be.

World of Warcraft is breaking some moulds, by which I mean breaking moulds that Blizzard themselves have created. If you’ve been following the upcoming Shadowlands expansion you are probably aware that Blizzard is introducing the first trans character; Pelagos. Pelagos appears as a man when you see him in Shadowlands, but the NPC is a woman in the living world.

What does this have to do with gender changes? Currently the only way to change your character’s gender is to fork over real money. According to an interview with Eurogamer Blizzard executive producer John Hight stated that the team got together to talk about the shop feature and decided keeping it as a paid service was “not the right message.”

“And as we were adding things up in Shadowlands, we realised, ‘Gosh the only way you can change your gender in World of Warcraft is to go through this paid service.’ And we felt like that’s not the right message.

In Shadowlands the option to change genders will be one handled in the barber shop. Shadowlands launches this fall. MMORPGs have handled services like changing race and gender very differently with some locking it behind a paywall (World of Warcraft), others offering it as in-game services (such as RuneScape), and some just not offering it at all.

Players who have wanted to change their character’s looks will be happy to hear that if they wait a little longer they won’t need to shell out a month’s subscription to do so.
