Hotcakes: Don’t Call Magic Legends Beta

It’s a full launch game pretending to be beta.

Magic: Legends is out and fully launched. How do I know this? The game is open and available for everyone to play. Characters are not being wiped from here on out. The battle pass has launched and is called “Season 1”. There is a fully fleshed out cash shop. Buffs are stupidly expensive. I’ll reiterate on the fully realized cash shop.

But Magic: Legends isn’t being called a fully launched game because Perfect World doesn’t want to call it a fully launched game. They aren’t going to call it fully launched for two reasons; the first is because they want to claim launches on PC and console within a certain level of parity. Second to deflect criticism because the game was clearly rushed out the door to start generating revenue.

Because a beta has bugs. Of course it has bugs, that’s why they call it a beta. A fully launched game with these kind of bugs, well that’s unacceptable. Magic: Legends already had a beta where characters were wiped. They also had a short head start to this beta period where characters were wiped. By all measures except Perfect World deciding not to call it a launch, it is a launch.

And boy howdy is Magic: Legends in bad shape for a full launch. Optimization is terrible, there are bugs galore, chat options are bad, the early community is toxic as all get out, the Epic store version was partially busted, options that should be standard are missing, there are apparently no servers outside of North America, etc, etc, etc. But of course Perfect World made sure that cash shop was in pristine working condition. Because setting priorities is important.

Magic: Legends is out, even if Perfect World doesn’t want the much-deserved criticism that will come with that status.
