Fallout 76 Sunsets Its BR Mode

Nuclear Winter to shut down in September.

Fallout 76 has a battle royale mode called Nuclear Winter, and Nuclear Winter has a problem. Nobody plays it. In a recent dev blog, the folks at Bethesda detailed update news for Fallout 76. That news includes a free play week, a discount, upcoming content drops, and more. Oh and Nuclear Winter is getting shut down permanently.

The problem, as I said, is that nobody plays it which makes getting a match pretty darn hard.

When we first introduced Nuclear Winter, we were thrilled to watch so many players from our community, as well as many newcomers, dive head first into our take on the ruthless last-player-standing Battle Royale genre. Over time, however, we’ve seen the vast majority of players prefer to explore other aspects of the game. It has also become tougher to put full Nuclear Winter lobbies together without also making sacrifices on match wait times.

Avid players of Nuclear Winter aren’t going uncompensated as Bethesda plans to give everyone perk coins for each level you obtained in the mode. Rewards specific to Nuclear Winter will mostly be made available in adventure mode through some other means, aside from things like the Vault Boy statues that will remain exclusive. Bethesda also notes in the dev blog that they are working on more PvP content to replace this going away.

The good news is that you have until September’s content drop to play all the Nuclear Winter your heart can withstand. After that it’s all over but the crying.
