War Thunder Devs Sent Classified Military Docs

Claim they won’t use it to develop War Thunder.

Here’s a story you don’t hear about every day. An avid fan of War Thunder, an online multiplayer game where players duke it out in historically accurate tanks and planes, wanted to give the developers at Gaijin Entertainment a tipoff that the Challenger 2 main battle tank was not modeled completely accurately. To prove this, the user posted photos of the Challenger 2 Army Equipment Support Publication.

The problem? That document is absolutely classified and sharing it was definitely a crime.

Gaijin Entertainment received written confirmation from the UK Ministry of Defense that the documents were not declassified, and that the original poster could face up to 14 years in prison if caught and prosecuted for violations of the Official Secrets Act. They also warned that the continued dissemination on the forums could cause problems for Gaijin Entertainment’s international staff.

Ultimately the effort was useless, as due to the classified nature of the documents Gaijin Entertainment cannot legally use the information to fix the tank. The lesson? Don’t steal state secrets to try to improve a video game.
