Shady developer does even more shady stuff.
Magic 2 Master developer Laniatus LLC almost seems to be purposely ruining its own reputation at this point. Not too long after their latest PR blunder both in accidentally posting fake testimonials and then throwing a temper tantrum over the media coverage of said fake testimonials, Laniatus has apparently decided to continue down the road of self destruction.
Specifically we need to talk about YouTuber Callum Upton and Laniatus’ decision to commit criminal perjury over a video criticizing the game’s Kickstarter campaign. Magic 2 Master is currently on track to severely fall short of its $26k Kickstarter goal with 30 backers pledging $7.5k as of this publishing.
In a now-removed video posted to his YouTube channel, Callum Upton talked about the Kickstarter critiquing how much the dev was asking for stretch rewards as well as the overall value of the Kickstarter and the apparent quality of the game itself. All pretty standard fare. But rather than taking the criticism on the nose, developer Laniatus took the route of copyright striking the video and Callum Upton’s channel.
While it’s never been charged, filing a bad faith copyright strike is illegal. It falls under U.S. Code, Title 18, Section 1621 regarding making false statements in an official document, with the copyright owner submitting a DMCA under penalty of perjury if it is wrong. Were Callum Upton to bring a civil lawsuit against Laniatus, they could be held liable and be required to pay damages as well as attorneys fees for filing this bad faith takedown.
The video itself has been reuploaded to YouTube. MMO Fallout has procured a full offline copy and will be reuploading if it is once again removed.
