Grab the Tea, Final Fantasy XIV Announces Sales Taxes

Throw Yoshi P in a harbor.

We’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that Square Enix must have gotten a call from the tax man, as starting June 25 Final Fantasy XIV will begin charging sales tax in states where it is applicable. The bad news? I don’t understand the meaning of “good news.”

As announced on the official website;

Beginning June 25, 2024, all customer transactions on the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store and Mog Station, including game subscriptions, will be subject to any state or local sales tax, where applicable. Any purchases made following the introduction of these changes will be adjusted to include estimated sales tax based on the address registered on the Square Enix account from which the purchase is made.

Users are encouraged to ensure that the address registered to your Square Enix account is correct, which means all of you who presently live in M0ntana (wink wink) will still pay no sales taxes once the change goes live. Because Montana doesn’t have sales tax, and neither does Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Oregon.

Is there anything stopping you from putting your address in as 1824 King Ave W Billings, MT 59102? I don’t know, but you will be declaring your location as being the delicious Texas Roadhouse steakhouse. Cactus BlossomĀ® not included with your address change.
