Nintendo Hits Palworld With Patent Lawsuit

Filed in Japan.

Much like Freddy and Jason, Alien and Predator, and Sadako and Kayako, the internet has been waiting with baited breath to see when Nintendo would finally sue PokeMon-esque title Palworld and kick off a fight many saw as inevitable.

And that time is September 18, 2024.

Nintendo of Japan announced a lawsuit against Pocketpair Inc., surprisingly not alleging copyright infringement over the monster designs but unspecified patent infringements.

This lawsuit seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights.

Pocketpair has responded to the lawsuit publicly, stating at this time they are “unaware of the specific patents we are accused of infringing upon, and [they] have not been notified of such details.”

We will follow up as more details are made publicly available.
