Dell ceases shipping certain models to certain states.
If you thought to yourself this week “gee, I finally saved up enough to buy that Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 Gaming Desktop PC from Dell, and I live in California” then do I have bad news for you. Your deeply specific request is now unfortunately illegal. This is getting picked up more around the net, but The Register reported this week that Dell is no longer shipping specific models of gaming PCs to specific states.
Specifically those models include the one I mentioned above, as well as the most power-hungry PCs available for sale. In fact there’s a warning on the store page to let you know that if you live in one of several states, your order will be cancelled before it is shipped.
This product cannot be shipped to the states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption regulations adopted by those states. Any orders placed that are bound for those states will be canceled.
Dell confirmed in a statement to The Register that the restrictions are due to energy efficiency requirements in those states. In other words, the California grid can’t handle your MLG-tier gaming needs, nor can Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, and the others.
Yes, this was driven by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Tier 2 implementation that defined a mandatory energy efficiency standard for PCs – including desktops, AIOs and mobile gaming systems. This was put into effect on July 1, 2021.
Does it get worse? Of course it does, it always does. Come December 9, the next tier of legislation goes into effect covering a wider range of hardware as well as monitors with high refresh rates. Get those Christmas purchases in ASAP, folks.
