Steam Scams: Fraudulent Playnite Steam Upload Goes Dark

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Just a couple of weeks ago I reported on a new scam that had appeared on Steam: An open source, free to download/use piece of software called Playnite was being sold not by its creator but by someone else. Playnite is a library software similar to GOG Galaxy 2.0 that manages your game library across multiple different programs in one easy to use app.

The version on Steam was reuploaded as Loong’s Utilities Playnite despite Loong not being the creator or owner of the app. Legally speaking there was nothing stopping Loong from publishing the app and asking for money under Playnite’s licensing terms. The uploader did however make the bold decision to charge $100 for the program perhaps hoping that someone desperate was looking for a Steam alternative on Steam.

Or maybe this was a money laundering scheme. They happen a lot on Steam. Playnite on Steam has 0 activity and 0 reviews, meaning hopefully nobody bought it.

Regardless, as of March 2 Playnite has been retired from sale at the publisher’s request. Is this a turnaround for Loong? I’m guessing no. Still users can breathe a sigh of relief that another con artist didn’t really try, and seemingly didn’t get away with it.
