Chronicles of Elyria: It’s Not Dead, Just Resting

Tired and shagged out after a long squawk.

Chronicles of Elyria has closed its store, run out of money, put the SoE map back into read only mode, and laid off all employees. If you read the fact that the game is dead and interpreted that Chronicles of Elyria is dead, well boy howdy could you not be any more wrong.

Sure Chronicles of Elyria has no employees and no funding, and development has been suspended, but that doesn’t mean that the news is all bad! Just ask CEO Jeromy Walsh.

“On March 24th I posted a “State of Elyria” update for our game, Chronicles of Elyria, to our blog. In that post, I informed our community that, due to the under-performance of our recent Settlers of Elyria event and the economic impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I had made the hard decision to lay off staff and suspend development. However, it was my aim to leave the blog post with a message of hope that we could find a way to secure additional funding, honor your pledge package rewards, and deliver the game we promised. In retrospect, I understand that the message might have been interpreted in many ways, for which I take full responsibility. To correct any misunderstandings going forward, let me clarify the status of Chronicles of Elyria.”

According to Walsh, Chronicles of Elyria is definitely not permanently ending development. Theoretically one cannot legally prove that backers won’t get what they paid for between next year and when the sun explodes hundreds of millions of years from now. You just can’t prove it.

Now Jeromy Walsh’s statement may be coming in response to complaints to the Washington Attorney General’s Office, or news that players are discussing setting up a class action lawsuit against the company. It might be. It could also be an attempt to stave off any permanent reputational damage the next time Jeromy asks for funding for a game and people say “weren’t you that guy that squandered nearly $8 million out of incompetence?”
