Although Conan Unconquered Has Kinda Burned.
Funcom this week released their annual revenue report for 2019, and the results are certainly related to income. CEO Rui Casais notes in his letter that the company released more games in 2019 than in a single year in Funcom history (10 games/DLC spread over 23 stores).
While Conan Exiles remains a bedrock of the company, titles like Conan Unconquered have not fared as well as the company would hope. Last year also saw Tencent pop up and become majority shareholder for Funcom as a business.
“In the middle of these many publishing activities, Conan Exiles has been our bedrock. We’ve continued actively developing it and released five DLCs in the year, released it to millions of players as part of the Sony PS+ service, and have seen a very positive trend in the player numbers and activity of the game. Conan Exiles proves that the core of Funcom in creating and operating persistent online worlds is what we’re best at, and it’s something we’re taking to heart both for the game and for the future internal projects.”
Revenue for 2019 amounted to $23.6 million, a steep drop from 2018 where Funcom reported $33.8 million. The report does indicate a need for additional funding in order for Funcom to carry out its 2020/2021 plans, as well as reporting a net loss of $289 thousand for the fiscal year.
Upcoming survival title Dune is still a few years out.
