Early Access Checkup: Fantasy Tales Online Ain’t So Great

It’s basically unplayable at the moment.

Fantasy Tales Online is one of those games that I’d hate to give a bad status report on, but after four years in Early Access the game is not doing great. In fact it’s nigh unplayable at this point in time. I say that after spending three minutes trying to kill a single beetle and being unsuccessful due to server lag.

So Fantasy Tales Online launched into Early Access on May 5, 2016. It is a quaint little top-down MMORPG. It has a 71% “mostly positive” rating on Steam. There is virtually nobody playing it.

That considered, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the first thing you see upon logging in to Fantasy Tales Online is a notice saying that development is presently on hold, and even less surprising that the servers are unstable to the point that they are generally unavailable and at the best of times feel like playing on an old dial-up modem due to all of the lag and rubberbanding. The servers have been unstable for a long time looking at the reviews, up to if not more than a year running.

Without any content updates in four years, I think it’s safe to say that Fantasy Tales Online won’t be getting a resurgence at any point in the future. If it does, we’ll be the first to step up and talk about it. Until then there is a wide sea of better things to spend your gaming time on.

Otherwise the game is free to play.
