Epic went for it and got it.
One might come to the conclusion that this is all according to plan. Fortnite, the favored game of everyone including your mother has been removed from the Apple App store today following Epic’s decision to introduce a direct pay option into the mobile version of the game. Epic dropped the price of V-Bucks by 20% across the board on direct pay, meaning those who paid through Apple’s method would be paying a premium to cover Apple’s 30% take.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has been highly critical of the mobile revenue share with Apple and Google. Apple commented in a statement to The Verge:
Today, Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result their Fortnite app has been removed from the store. Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services.
How long with Fortnite be off the App store? Hopefully less than a fortnight. Apple is currently the target of two anti-trust investigations.
