PSA: Microsoft Flight Simulator Circumvents Steam’s Refund Policy

Donde los yikes.

Update: Valve has stated that installation time will not factor into refunding Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Original Story: Microsoft Flight Simulator is here and thing aren’t looking so sunny on the horizon there chief. Right now the game has a 47% mixed review score from 830 user reviews on Steam. The good news is that you can get your hands on MFS as part of the Game Pass Ultimate and if you are a new customer you can get a month of Game Pass Ultimate for $1. You can try out Microsoft Flight Simulator for a whole month for less than the cost of a junior bacon cheeseburger from Wendy’s, granted not as delicious.

The avenue I wouldn’t take to trying out Microsoft Flight Simulator is through Steam because Asobo Studio is circumventing the Steam refund policy by putting the bulk of the game download on the client itself. Effectively what this means is you download a 500mb client which then downloads the 90gb installer. You are on the clock while you are downloading the game.

As most of you know Steam’s refund policy covers two hours of gameplay or two weeks after purchase, whichever comes first. If you spend six hours downloading the game, you’re going to be well past the time to get a guaranteed refund before you even start up your first plane. While this doesn’t mean you are completely out of luck for getting a refund, it does mean you’ll have to appeal to customer support and basically put your fate in the hands of whether the representative you get is in the mood and has sympathy for your plight. For most people their refund window will be long passed by the time the full 150 gigabyte installation is done.

ON THE OTHER HAND if you spend $1 instead of $60 you can get your hands on the Game Pass version and test it out. Make sure it works on your computer. You’ll get a full month for your dollar and although that dollar isn’t refundable, it’s still a heck of a lot more reasonable a wager than putting sixty down minimum (up to $120 for the deluxe version) and hoping the game works or that the CS rep is in a good mood because the vending machine had cool ranch Doritos in stock.

As a bonus you get access to a ton of other games that are also on Game Pass library. Games like Grounded, Journey To A Savage Planet, Halo, and more. If you own an Xbox it will give you Xbox Live Gold. The cost/benefit analysis is pretty wide. Seriously, it’s a dollar.

There’s been a few suggestions that Steam support is being more lenient toward this game but I wouldn’t buy the game on Steam just to test that theory.
