It’s the Dark Souls of battle royale titles.
Soulfire isn’t a huge game, in fact there are about a baker’s dozen people playing the game on Steam as of this publishing. The good news is that the game can be played in spite of this fact because it has bots. The better news is that those bots will probably be a little bit challenging to a new player.
I ran through a few rounds of Soulfire in singles and I can safely say that this is the Dark Souls of battle royale games. Soulfire is a battle royale fighter that pits players against each other on a giant almost Castlevania-esque map. It is a side-scrolling 2.5D game that emphasizes roll-dodging and launched free at the beginning of the month.
It’s fine, although I can’t see it lasting long on this market considering it already launched to no fanfare. The general gameplay loop is what you’d expect from a battle royale game. You spawn into the map in the place of your choosing, run around grabbing weapons and items, increase your armor and gather healing items, and kill anyone who comes in your way. Over the course of the match the map gradually decreases in size until everyone is basically spooning each other. The last person standing wins.
One aspect I really don’t like about Soulfire is that it is very easy to just about stunlock someone. It makes fights highly calculated, but it also means that if you get hit once you’re going to get hit two to four more times with no chance to do anything about it. There’s nothing more annoying than getting stunlocked to death by a player who knows how to time their attacks well.
Thankfully the game is great about auto-equipping better armor meaning you won’t spend a whole lot of time sitting in menus figuring out how to improve your loadout after you kill someone or come across another chest.
One thing preventing people from seeing Soulfire in my honest opinion is negligence from the developer. It doesn’t look like Soulfire is tagged as free to play and as such it does not show up in the free to play category. They need to fix this. There’s twelve people playing right now.
FIX IT.
Otherwise I suggest giving this game a go. It won’t cost you a dime and you might have some fun.
