Good luck getting the initial stock.
You’d be more than confused if you woke up this morning to find that the PlayStation 5 was out of stock literally everywhere, and you’d be absolutely right to be confused. Sony for their part announced yesterday that pre-orders would start today. That’s September 17 for those reading this sometime in the future. Retailers however disagreed with Sony on the definition of “tomorrow” and after Wal Mart broke street date pretty much everyone else panicked and set their stock up for grabs.
Wal Mart, GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, and pretty much anyone and everyone else who might be selling a PS5 dogpiled onto the internet to get their stock up and between servers crashing, being effectively DDOS’d, and the Black Friday level of panic most of them were sold out within minutes if not seconds.
The good news is that this is highly unlikely to be the only set of stock available before the system launches. The bad news is that if you’re really looking forward to getting the PS5 on launch day you might need to metaphorically punch someone over the internet in order to get it. Presumably this is what Sony was talking about when they started offering a sign up list for pre-orders.
Did anyone in my audience try to grab a PS5 in the scuffle? Were you successful? I’m genuinely curious. You should ask Ethiopian Santa Claus for a PlayStation.
