You’ll need to do something extra.
The Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War alpha begins today (September 18) and for most of the world that means booting up their PlayStation 4 and loading the game to play. You don’t even need a PlayStation Plus membership to play the game. Most of you don’t.
Some might have noticed during the PlayStation 5 showcase that the Cold War alpha has a bit of an asterisk on the whole “play free” thing. Actually it’s just a straight up asterisk. Regardless, there is a “nominal fee” required to access in Germany and Japan.
What is that fee? The information is a little harder to find.
For Germany it’s a bit simpler. You will need an active PlayStation Plus account to play the alpha period, due to the age rating and because you live in Germany. For Japan not only do you need a PlayStation Plus account, but due to Japanese laws regarding CERO Z rated games, Sony is legally required to validate a credit card on file in order to acquire the alpha. Because it’s illegal for them to sell the game to minors.
Generally you’d have to pay the full price of the game via credit card, but since this is a virtually free alpha the actual “nominal fee” is not that amount. The Japanese PlayStation store has it listed as 100 Yen, or roughly 95 cents USD. The credit card payment is their age confirmation and the hundred yen cannot be paid with wallet money or with a PSN card. The hundred yen charge will be reversed and returned as wallet money.
This content has acquired the age-specific rating “regulation conformity” by the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), but when the product version is released, it will be reviewed assuming the same rating “Z”. Therefore, it cannot be used by persons under the age of 18. You must be at least 18 years old to use this content. We will make a credit card payment as the method.
