It’s worth knowing.
Genshin Impact is censoring its chat because Chinese law requires it.
If you’ve been on the internet over the last week you’ve probably heard of the latest craze to come out of China; Genshin Impact. A free to play MMO on PC, PS4, and mobile, Genshin Impact is an action RPG with gacha elements and waifu collection galore. The game has brought in millions of downloads, millions of dollars in revenue, and looks to be a big thing at least for the next few months.
But some have taken notice and umbrage with the fact that developer has filtered certain words including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the word “words” for an unknown reason that might come down to bad translation. Genshin Impact comes to us from Chinese developer miHoYo who are bound by local laws for video game content.
In short, censoring words like Hong Kong isn’t a choice the developer made, it’s mandated.
Chinese developed games have to comply with a ton of content and in game censorship rules because of these laws and regulations
There is a list of banned words that cannot be used in game / via chat functions
Foreign developers also need to comply when publishing games in China

Gamers will have to decide for themselves whether this is enough to give Genshin Impact a pass.
