Fortnite Takes Among Us, But Without The Quality

Imagine if Among Us wasn’t good.

Among Us is the sensation of the nation, so it stands that other games are going to get in on the action and use that formula for success. Fortnite thankfully has a creative mode where players can go in and build homages to popular titles so Epic doesn’t have to do it themselves. They have however put up The Spy Within as a featured limited time mode that includes its own cosmetic rewards for completing missions.

Unfortunately The Spy Within is total crap.

The Spy Within is a limited time mode where ten players join a server and two players become the spy that must hunt down the butlers who have to perform tasks and generate enough coins to win the game. The spies must hunt down butlers and kill them before they fill up the coffers to leave. I’ll start the nitpicking off by saying that this premise is ridiculous and doesn’t make any sense. It feels like the creators took the synopsis of Among Us and just replaced words madlib style with no concern for making something vaguely coherent.

It doesn’t help that the game mode is busted to hell and back. I’d rather not count how many times I got kicked out of matches or most of the match just crashed out after a couple of minutes. The fact that conversation is almost nonexistent means that you could as a spy literally walk around killing people and get away with it. I did on multiple playthroughs.

Of course this problem also comes down to Fortnite’s community. 95% of the people I encountered were not using their mics and there wasn’t any text chat for those who wanted to give their suspicions with. The other 5% were screeching prepubescent boys not quite proficient in their R’s basically chewing on their microphones while blowing out everyone’s eardrums with “IT WAS DA GUY OVAH DERE! HE’S A IMPOSTUH!” The other players in the server overwhelmingly turned on these kids and immediately voted them out. Probably because they seemed suspicious. I’m guessing just for some peace and quiet.

The good news is that you can pretty much complete all of the tasks in five rounds and get the four pieces of bling. The bad news is that it’s five rounds of grating your nerves and hoping the experience will end soon.
