Plans for better integration into Unreal Engine.
RAD Game Tools is a name that should be household to most gamers, even if you don’t really recognize it. RAD is the developer behind the Bink video format that has been widely used for full motion video going back over twenty years. It is still used and actively developed to this day.
Epic Games has announced their acquisition of RAD Game Tools with plans to further integrate their technology into the Unreal Engine.
We know first-hand how impressive RAD’s compression technology is, having used it to improve the load time and quality of our most popular games – including Fortnite. The RAD team includes some of the world’s leading compression, video and game dev tooling experts, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the Epic family.
The deal does not mean exclusivity however as RAD continues to work with their partners outside of the Unreal Engine. RAD Games has been a known entity on the Unreal Engine going back years, so the acquisition feels like more of an inevitability than a surprise.
