The concept of property laws intermingling with nontangible items is one that has slowly crept into the legal system of various countries over the past decade or so. Usually when we hear about digital criminals being arrested for their theft it has something to do with financial crimes like bitcoin scams or money marketing fraud. There is the odd case where someone gets held up at gunpoint for their RuneScape currency but that’s a one in a million story.
This week’s piece however comes to us from the Czech Republic who take Counter Strike: Global Offensive very seriously. According to Czech TV news ?eská televize, a trade went sour when an unnamed player offered thirty thousand crowns (roughly $1,400 USD) for a relatively rare knife skin. The buyer deposited four thousand crowns as an apparent good faith with the rest to be sent on handover. The seller did not receive the subsequent payment and thus reported the theft to Pilsen region authorities.
The thief has not yet been caught. Virtual fraud in the Czech Republic carries up to an eight year sentence according to Czech authorities. In a real, non-digital prison.
