Stadia Sued Over 4K Advertising

Google advertised 4K most of its games didn’t support.

Advertising a platform’s capabilities is always going to be dangerous waters. Sure Stadia is theoretically capable of running games at 4K, 60 frames and pumping out more power than a PlayStation or Xbox can. But if the games aren’t taking advantage of that process, are customers actually getting what they paid for? According to one Jacqueline Shepherd the answer is no.

Which finds Google on the defending end of a class action lawsuit over whether the company lied to customers about its platform being a good place for 4K gaming. Also involved as defendants are id Software and Bungie. id Software previously claimed Doom Eternal supported 4K 60 fps with HDR, only to walk that back later to upscaled 4K.

The lawsuit asks for quite a bit in terms of damages, but if covering these suits has taught me anything I have a feeling the plaintiff’s lawyers will more than willingly accept a big settlement for themselves and a pittance to go around to the actually “damaged” class they claim to represent. Look forward to your five dollar Google store gift card when it shows up sometime in 2023.
