It has been over a year since Bioware revealed that yes, they were working on a revamp of 2019’s Anthem. I say “were” because for the one year anniversary of that announcement Bioware has now confirmed that they are no longer working on said revamp. While the development work on Anthem has stopped, the game will continue running as-is.
In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.
Earlier this month we learned that Electronic Arts would be deciding whether or not to proceed with Anthem Next’s development. The weeks of silence pretty much confirmed what everyone was thinking; that there was no future for this game.
Anthem’s 2019 launch cemented its place on many “Worst Games of 2019” lists. Between a lackluster story, heavy microtransactions, and pre-release teasers that turned out to be completely fake, Anthem also launched with major technical issues. After six years of development, Bioware had little to show customers and the game suffered for it.
