You’ll no longer need Xbox Live to play over 50 games.
Microsoft angered just about everyone a few months ago when they announced that Xbox Live Gold would be effectively doubling in price. The backlash and resulting PR disaster was so strong that not only did Microsoft rescind the price hike, they announced that Xbox Live would be more consumer friendly as a result.
As part of those plans, starting today gamers can play over 50 free to play games without Xbox Live Gold. The list of titles includes everything you’d expect; Fortnite, Roblox, the Outriders demo, etc. Also included is Defiance 2050 for those who wanted to get some game time in before it shuts down next week.
Today, we are sharing more details on our plans to make online multiplayer in free-to-play games available on Xbox without an Xbox Live Gold membership. As part of listening to your feedback, this change will take place starting today, and all Xbox players will be able to access online multiplayer at no charge for a library of over 50 free-to-play games that support online multiplayer.
Between this and Sony’s decision to suspend their planned sunsetting of the PlayStation store, it does show how much influence a combination of public outrage and scathing media coverage can have on the industry.
Most importantly, gamers who purchased Xbox Live Gold solely for the games that are now free to play can request a refund for their remaining time. More information available on the Microsoft FAQ.
