Development will continue at the publisher.
Torchlight III will forever be one of those “what could have been” titles, starting out as a full fledged MMO before transitioning into a standard ARPG title with vastly overhauled systems. But developer Echtra Games has some bad news to go with the good news on this week’s update. The Spring update for Torchlight III introduced a host of new pets, the new Cursed Captain class, and more. It also marks Echtra Games pulling out of Torchlight’s development.
According to Max Schaefer, the news comes as a result of Zynga’s acquisition of Echtra back in March. While Echtra goes on to new projects (hopefully something other than online casinos), Torchlight III will be passed back over to Perfect World.
But this is also a sad message because it marks the end of Echtra Games’ work on Torchlight III. As you may have heard in the news, we were acquired by Zynga back on March 2nd. As a result of this transition, we are moving on to new (and exciting) things, and we will be passing the baton back to our partners at Perfect World. We absolutely enjoyed our time with Torchlight III, and only hope for the best for the future of the franchise.
