Roblox Hit With $200 Million Lawsuit

Over use of music without authorization.

Roblox is basically an empire built off of copyright infringement, so it should come as little surprise that someone is giving the company its day in court. The National Music Publishers’ Association announced this week that it is filing a $200 million lawsuit against Roblox citing unauthorized use of its artists music. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of numerous artists and groups.

NMPA President & CEO David Israelite explained that the lawsuit is due to Roblox going well out of its way to avoid paying royalties, as well as the fact that the company makes millions of dollars off of said infringements. Users are required to pay every time they upload a music file, giving Roblox a financial incentive not to block uploads.

Israelite explained, “They’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars by requiring users to pay every time they upload music onto the platform – taking advantage of young people’s lack of understanding about copyright – and then they take virtually no action to prevent repeat infringement or alert users to the risks they are taking.”

The NMPA also ramped up targeting of streamers on Amazon-owned Twitch, promising to continue to take down unauthorized music use until Amazon agrees to licensing terms.
