Beta Perspective: Ashfall Sure Is A Game

It’s mobile crap.

Ashfall is mobile crap, and that’s an issue. Because it will always be mobile crap regardless of if it launches on PC or eventually on console. Always be mobile crap.

What does that mean? A game whose content grind is meant to be played in the length of time it takes to finish a medium-length trip to the toilet. A game whose cash shop will always vastly outpace the quality and content pace of the actual game. A game that will ask quadruple the cost of AAA games for garbage Chinese level output.

A game where you can bet that its monetization is always going to get much, much worse, before the developer inevitably abandons it in a year or two if that.

Mobile crap.

Ashfall got a lot of publicity back in May when they released a trailer and you’ll notice roughly 0% of the news sites that covered it back then are publishing impressions on the beta. It isn’t particularly good.

The gameplay loop of Ashfall involves traveling across an overworld and occasionally coming across instanced fights that take maybe 30 seconds to a minute and a half to complete. Jump in, kill a handful of enemies, jump out. Mobile crap.

It’s not an MMO and in fact it hardly qualifies as a multiplayer game outside of the shared hub and needing to be online to play.

To make some positive comments about the game I will say that it looks pretty good in spots when the sun hits your eye like a big pizza pie. Nothing mind blowing, but better than I’d expect from a mobile game. The shooting also feels better than a lot of other mobile shooters I have played in the past.

The recoil on guns is disturbingly jarring, shaking your character’s whole body. The AI is terrible and just runs straight at the player and mostly stands in the open while shooting despite this being a cover shooter.

And you can see the shoddy monetization systems in place but just not in-game yet. Like the energy system that most mobile games ditched years ago. Or the keys required to access certain dungeons. And you know the monetization won’t get any better once the game launches.

Ashfall isn’t good.
