Jagex Apologizes For Hero Pass Snafu

Promises changes.

The Hero Pass came out in RuneScape recently and, well, everyone hates it. Not just everyone, but everyone. Even Jagex employees hate it. In fact it’s so hated you might wonder just how it got past QA and into the live game. I’ll answer that for you; investors.

Well fervor against Hero Pass has hit the “can’t ignore it any longer” threshold and Jagex has apologized and promised to set things right. A post on the official website admits “we messed up” and that the update alienated the community at a completely unsurprising level.

We messed up. The launch of Hero Pass alienated and frustrated many in the community. You’ve told us, amongst other things, that it was too pay-to-win and you’d lost important aspects of Daily Challenges.

We made a significant misjudgement and we are sorry. We need to reflect on that and learn from it. That also means we need to take more time to listen and work with the community. How and why that happened is for another time, what’s most important right now is what we’re doing about it.

So what are they doing about it? Disabling hero pass level purchases, removing content buffs from the pass entirely, pulling xp buffs to the free track so they don’t require payment to unlock, and making the premiere pass only reward cosmetics.

In addition they are going to reinstate daily challenges as its own separate system, and rebalance the pass so it isn’t obviously meant to get people to buy levels for real money.

Players who purchased the Hero Pass and no longer want it due to these changes are encouraged to contact Jagex customer support to request a refund.
