Riot Games Lays Off Over 500

Worldwide.

We aren’t going to get away from layoffs any time soon. Riot Games today announced it will be laying off approximately 11% of its workforce globally, or around 530 jobs. The announcement notes that the layoffs predominately affect teams outside of core development.

Our vision for the future is bold and our commitment to our core live games – League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift – is more ambitious than ever. We’re prioritizing these teams so they can focus on the content, features, and updates that directly respond to what you’ve been asking for. Expect events, modes, and long-term roadmaps that lead to vibrant (hopefully multi-decade) futures for these games.

The announcement also notes that strategy card game Legends of Runeterra has been something of a dismal failure, costing far more to develop and maintain than it has brought in in revenue. As such the team will be reduced and refocused on The Path of Champions.

New game development under the Riot Forge brand will also come to an end and likely for similar reasons. Affected staff are being offered minimum six months severance pay as well as bonuses, shares, computers, career support, healthcare, and more.
