Apex Legends esports postpones finals.
The Apex Legends community is in a bit of a panic right now, and for once they are completely reasonable for doing so. Players watching the Apex Legends esports finals saw something kinda scary and it’s got people questioning the security integrity of the game.
Well let’s start with the basics; Apex Legends Esports cancelled the finals for the foreseeable future.
What’s the “competitive integrity” that they’re talking about? Someone broke their way into the NA finals game and forcibly gave players aimbots and wallhacks.
Now before people panic, it’s important to keep note that a lot of the specifics about this situation aren’t known yet. Big questions like how did the hacker get the cheats on the player’s computers? Was it through the game, which would be a big problem, or through some outside software they all shared?
It’s entirely possible the players were infected with a piece of malware and this was something of a day zero attack. Maybe the players actually had cheats installed and the guy who runs the service turned them on to do a bit of trolling. Again, we don’t know.
If you’re worried that Apex Legends may be a security ticking time bomb, I highly recommend deleting it for now, or just not running it. This wouldn’t be the first time games were exploited to inject code and download unauthorized programs onto a person’s computer. The Source Engine has a long history of remote code execution exploits, and Apex Legends is running on a modified version of the Source Engine, meaning there’s very possibly some old exploits still sitting in the code somewhere.
The billion dollar question is what this means for Apex Legends and the overall community in terms of security. If this happened due to something outside of the game, well that’s a story. If the game itself was used to drop cheat software on their computers, well that’s a major problem. Either way EA/Respawn need to make some kind of statement on the matter and soon.
Because speculation is going to run rampant and people are going to assume the worst the longer they wait.
