Beta Perspective: I Played Battle Crush

Roughly an hour.

I played Battle Crush, a brawler game currently in beta by NCSoft. It could use some work.

Battle Crush is currently in beta on Steam and Android, and the game is a brawler with a couple of modes right now. Team battle royale and team brawl. Both of them should be self-explanatory if you’ve played a video game before. There’s also a duel mode, even more explanatory.

I played a handful of rounds of the three modes, and while it started out pretty good I have to say I ended the game sessions moderately frustrated but also somewhat satisfied. Battle Crush is one of those games that I should probably nut up and play it on its intended system like a real gamer; mobile. Keyboard controls aren’t fantastic, but they make do.

My views on Battle Crush are relatively skewed toward the negative right now because the battle royale is only available in trios and I generally dislike queuing with randos in BR games. That said, I’ve had a lot better time in this game trios than in Fortnite for example, because the community seems to be better behaved. Or I’m getting in bot matches, I have no clue. What I do know is nobody is dipping out two seconds into the match and nobody has gone AFK yet.

But Battle Crush is one of those games where when it works it works, and when it doesn’t it feels like crap. When my team is going through the map working as a group, we are whooping ass and taking names. A good beat down is always more fun when you’re on the delivering end and a decently coordinated team can really knock out anyone who comes across them.

Which brings me to the other side, when my third team member runs off in another direction and gets killed leaving the other two of us to get beaten unconscious. Battle Crush fighting lets players kick the crap out of each other, and often times when you’re on the receiving end there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s a combo system that is one of the major reasons I don’t play fighting games.

Like I said, when you’re stringing up combos and wrecking someone it’s great. When you’re forced to sit there and watch your health bar plummet as two enemy players tag team your ass raw, it’s less than delicious.

Matches are very short, you’d be amazed at how quickly the game will roll through the roster of players. I think rounds of battle royale have lasted less than 10 minutes for the most part. The map is pretty small and people start up clustered together in a lot of spots. I do like that you can somewhat change your starting position once you see where other players are.

Oh and before I finish this I’m going to make this one last comment; NCSoft needs to make completing matches give battle pass progress like virtually every single other battle royale game, and not just leave it dependent on completing missions. Because if you don’t, I will personally never play this game again.
