Emails and only emails.
BitCraft is currently in alpha and the folks at Clockwork Labs emailed users this week to announce that their emails have been leaked. The period of vulnerability existed between April 2 and April 4 and resulted in player emails publicly visible via API.
We are sending this email to inform you of a security incident that occurred during the BitCraft closed Alpha playtest. Due to miscommunication and a misconfiguration of the game server databases, for a period of about 54 hours from the start of the BitCraft closed Alpha test on Tuesday, April 2 until Thursday, April 4 at 9 PM EDT, the email addresses of players who had logged into the game during that time were publicly queryable using the SpacetimeDB API.
The good news is that emails are the only thing that were leaked, as the database didn’t contain any other identifying information. Also, email addresses have been removed from said database for extra protection and the vulnerability itself has been patched.
So if you get some extra emails telling you you’ve won the Nigerian lottery, you know where they came from.
More on BitCraft as it appears.
Well, this is only going to be a problem for the idiots who still don’t use email masks. ^^)
Come to think of it, makes me wonder what are the chances that these guys sold the emails and then pretended they were hacked to evade responsibility. xD
Probably low. You’d need a lot more emails than the BitCraft closed alpha to get money. That database is probably not enough to buy a pizza from Little Caesars.
Hm, so you’re sayin’ this game of theirs is THAT unpopular?
Oh boy, i don’t envy these guys. xD
But then again, yet another survival/crafting game, what can we possibly expect?
It’s like Palia didn’t teach anyone a lesson huh, or did they start working on this before Palia was even a thing? In which case, their luck must be quite shit indeed. I don’t envy them twice now. xD
I’d say it’s more a case of email lists being almost worthless nowadays. Marketers want more details on the people on the list, you can get a big list of emails for free if you’re just going to blanket spam marketing/scams.
