Committing to transparency by following the law.
As someone who almost never talks about EA Games titles here on MMO Fallout, I love Respawn Entertainment’s blog writers. If Respawn ever goes belly up these people are going to have great careers doing damage control for politicians when they get caught doing something hypocritical. And by great I mean terrible.
The folks who write the Apex Legends blogs know that they are full of it, and they know that we know that they know that they are full of it. And yet their job is to write up a piece knowing that most of the people reading it will see through the lies, and they do it anyway.
Last time it was gaslighting around the Apex Legends monetization changes. This time it’s around drop rates in Apex Legends.
In compliance with Korean law, games like Apex Legends know require more detailed drop rate disclosures. But rather than just posting that they are making the changes and publicizing it, the folks at Respawn have to lie about it and try to puff themselves up in the public eye.
They’re not making the information global because, by making it public in Korea anyone would be able to see it anyway. They’re making the change global out of their commitment to transparency. You know, the transparency that Respawn had absolutely no interest in performing until a government agency forced them to at (legistlative) gunpoint.
Today, we’re sharing a global breakdown of the minimum drop rates in Apex Legends™ which will also be updated in our FAQ. Recently, new regulations were introduced in Korea which require more detailed drop rate disclosures. In maintaining our commitment to transparent and consistent communications, we are providing all players globally with the same information so that you can continue to make your own informed decisions about in-game purchases.
How committed were Respawn Entertainment to transparency? Well their big bullcrap line that got exposed was the Heirloom Shard drop rate. The company admits it previously described the drop rate as “less than 1%” but it’s actually .045%. Only 4.5% of what was implied by the vague descriptor.
Heirloom Shards are still guaranteed if you do not earn them after opening 500 Apex Packs†. Heirloom Shard drop rates were previously listed as “less than 1%”, but we can now share a more detailed percentage of 0.045%.
And you gotta love how they say “we can now share” as though something was preventing them before. Spoiler; there wasn’t. They just hid the number because players might be less receptive toward .045% than “less than 1%”.
Andrew Wilson taught them well.
Otherwise I have no opinion on the matter.
