Enad Global 7 this week announced the beginning of the end of the beginning of the end for Toadman Interactive. Announced as initiating a wind down period, Toadman is set to mostly close its operations over the course of 2025 impacting 69 employees and subcontractors. 42 apparently will be kept on board as part of a transition period.
EG7 directly blames the closure as a result of several failed attempts at turning around productivity at the studio, as well as the failure to secure work-for-hire contracts. Toadman had been contracted with a couple of Daybreak studios.
“The wind down decision stems directly from the continued industry challenges and the studio’s inability to secure new Work-for-Hire (WFH) contracts at a necessary pace.”
This does leave gamers wondering what will happen to Planetside 2, as Toadman Interactive took over development back in 2024. Daybreak notably sold the Planetside IP last year to a company nobody’s ever heard of; Bay Tree Tower Limited.
This does raise questions on Toadman Interactive’s other games. EvilVEvil has been in limbo since it launched. Toadman is also listed as developer/publisher on Block N Load, Bloodsports.TV (with Fatshark also credited), and Immortal: Unchained (Game Odyssey Limited publisher). There is also the case of Block N Load 2, currently in development.
In addition, 38 employees at Piranha Games will be getting axed over the next couple of quarters. This is due to the poor reception of Mech Warrior 5: Clans.
“The team at Piranha truly delivered a high-quality game that exceeded both internal as well as external expectations in terms of quality, story and gameplay. Despite the phenomenal work by the team at Piranha, the game failed to reach new audiences and expand its core audience as anticipated and therefore has not met the necessary sales targets, which has forced us to undertake necessary actions.” said Ji Ham, CEO of EG7
Piranha Games is one of the oldest game studios in Vancouver, having managed to survive roughly 21 years before EG7 took it over in 2020 and managed to kill it in less than four.
