Sony Concedes Defeat On Unpopular PSN Requirements

The Pope can finally play Spider-Man 2.

The video game industry is nothing without its executives holding out on self-destructive and ridiculous demands even if it costs them millions in potential revenue. And Sony is no stranger, with their insistence to require PSN accounts for games that have realistically no practical reason to require PSN game accounts.

And what did Sony get for this? The inability to sell their games in a lot of countries that Sony doesn’t feel like supporting via PSN, as well as some review bombing campaigns and a whole lot of negative press and ill will from the public.

Sony claimed at the time that the decision was for the safety and security of its players, a claim that immediately outed itself as a lie once Sony also started demanding PSN for single-player only titles like Spider-Man.

Well Sony has officially waved the white flag of surrender. In a blog post today, the company announced that a PSN account will be optional for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. You will however be able to link an account for cosmetics, many of which appear to just be early access to stuff you’d unlock much later on in the game or in new game+.

What does this mean for the 100+ countries that can’t access the games due to PSN requirements? For right now, absolutely nothing. Mostly because they haven’t done anything yet. We’ll have to see if Sony opens up purchases to the many, many countries that are currently region-locked out of buying their games on Steam.

I’m sure the Pope would like to finally play God of War Ragnarok on his Steam Deck.
