The house…wins?
Among the many changes in the switch from Overwatch to Overwatch 2, Blizzard stopped rewarding level-ups with a free loot box as part of the game’s ever-increasing desperation to milk players and give next to nothing for free. Unfortunately for Blizzard as competition like Marvel Rivals has repeatedly eaten their lunch, and amid crashing player numbers, eventually someone has to give.
So the folks at Blizzard have a bold new idea for improving Overwatch 2, and it involves returning a bunch of systems that they removed from Overwatch 1 that nobody particularly asked them to get rid of. Chief among them is the return of loot boxes.
What’s interesting about loot boxes coming back is that they apparently won’t be available for purchase, probably to avoid the growing number of countries where loot boxes are heavily regulated or outright banned. Players will be able to obtain them by completing weeklies and event quests, and there’ll be a couple legendary loot boxes in the battle pass.
Blizzard are also being transparent about odds this time around and the loot boxes are guaranteed to drop rare or better items in each box.
Overwatch 2 loot boxes drop with season 15. The ability to buy loot boxes with real money will probably be back after another two or three seasons once Blizzard integrates geo-blocking for players in those countries.
