Epic Triples Down On Fortnite Tournament Security

Players will need Secure Boot and TPM installed.

When your tournaments offer real money as a reward, you’re bound to get a lot of people cheating to get an advantage and win that cash. As Fortnite competitive has acquired something of a reputation for being a cheater’s paradise, Epic this week announced that they are coming down hard on people who would harm the credibility of a game where Peter Griffin can shoot Chun-Li in the face and then hit the griddy on her corpse.

Starting this week, players on PC will be required to install TPM and Secure Boot to participate in tournaments. TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module, and according to Microsoft can run on most PCs from the last five years. Secure Boot is meant to make it much harder for people to run cheats at boot.

Epic is also moving to a one-year matchmaking ban for first time cheaters with a second ban being permanent. Those with existing lifetime bans that have been in effect for more than a year will find their bans lifted. Except if you cheated in a tournament in which case you are still banned for life from tournaments, or if you sold cheats in which case you are still banned forever.

And there’s still the small possibility Epic will sue you.
