Stargate Worlds: I Don’t Want To Go On The Cart…

I don't want to go on the cart

Stargate Worlds is akin to the Duke Nukem Forever of the MMO world. Under approximately eight lawsuits currently, ranging from not paying employees to angry investors, to allegations of a ponzi scheme, the development of the oft-delayed Stargate Worlds can regularly be seen trudging along in a direct path towards nowhere.

Looking through my own archives, all of the news on MMO Fallout related to Stargate Worlds follows a similar point: A frantic, arm waving “We’re not dead yet!” directly removed from one of the early scenes in Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie. Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment had this to say recently:

Stargate Worlds: Not Dead?

In a move first capitalized by The Wizard, viewers got a glimpse of the oft-delayed and just as oft-sued, upcoming MMO Stargate Worlds. In the premier of Stargate Universe, character Eli Wallace is a gamer who finds his way into the Icarus program. After spending months attempting to complete an “unbeatable puzzle,” he gains the attention of Stargate Command. Of course, the game he is playing is none other than Stargate Worlds.

This is the first update on Stargate Worlds’ website since May, and it is unclear at this time whether this is a sign that the game is still going, or if what we saw was just a simple cameo from one section of the IP to another.

It’s only a little but we will have much more to show very soon as we mentioned earlier.

Certainly more to come. I don’t normally report on pure MMO news, but I make an exception for Stargate Worlds. You could make quite a nerdy soap opera based off of the development of Stargate Worlds. Will Stargate Worlds ever be released? Are the claims of the ponzi scheme true? Will Cheyenne’s employees ever be paid? Will Gary Whiting be thrown under the bus? Tune in next time folks! Same vaporware time, same vaporware place!

Stargate Worlds Continuing Development

The little MMO that could, Stargate Worlds has gathered quite the following. Not the massive scale of Aion or World of Warcraft, but quite an impressive following. I’ve been somewhat reluctant to talk about the title because, up until this point, it appeared that the prospects for this game were bleaker than the cancelled Halo and Harry Potter MMOs. Last year the company faced lawsuits over unpaid wages, as well as the departure of some key figureheads.

Well it appears Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment will be continuing on with the Stargate ship, as according to a post on MMORPG.com, they have received funding from investors.

“Things are actually very good here right now. We received some funding commitments that will provide financing over time and allow us to move forward with development and start catching up on our past due financial obligations, including some back payroll that we paid last week.”

Unfortunately, I still can’t say I have high hopes for Stargate Worlds coming to completion. When the Executive Producer jumps ship, it’s generally a bad sign. My prediction is that, unless CME becomes acquired by a big name publisher/developer like NCSoft or Sony Online Entertainment, this ship’s going to capsize very quickly.
