Shadowrun Servers Will Stay Up Despite Bankruptcy, Says Dev

ShadowrunOnline_140327_00022

Cliffhanger Productions has declared bankruptcy and is in the process of liquidation, and players are understandably concerned about the future of their MMO Shadowrun Chronicles. Luckily for customers and Kickstarter backers, we’ve been assured that the game isn’t going anywhere and will continue to receive updates.

The details are a little fuzzy, but we’ve learned that while Cliffhanger Productions Software GmbH has declared bankruptcy, the studio that handles Shadowrun Chronicles (formerly Shadowrun Online) is not. Shadowrun Chronicles is supported by Cliffhanger Productions Games GmbH, an affiliate of the similarly named company and a completely separate legal entity to the former. Furthermore, CPS declaring bankruptcy doesn’t mean that that studio will shut down, just that they are in the process of restructuring and will likely return in one form or another.

Shadowrun Online's Story System Is…Interesting?

shot_action_logo_720_02

Shadowrun Online passed its Kickstarter Goal of half a million dollars way back in August 2012, and while the game won’t be hitting its original May 2013 anticipated launch, the team over at Cliffhanger Productions is working hard and keeping the community informed. In an update released today, the team is blogging about how the story will work in Shadowrun Online.

The way the story will play out in Shadowrun Online is in phases, rather than the normal RPG storytelling mechanic of main quest and branching side-quests. Each player has their own story which forward the meta-plot for everyone. The example that they give is that players are tasked with taking down psychotic gangsters who are using a new drug. Once you personally take down enough of their hideouts, your personal plot advances and you move on to the next stage. Once enough players have raided these hideouts, the meta-plot will advance for all players and the global mission will be striking against the drug distributors. As players assist a group, that organization sees their influence rise, eventually leading to more missions given to other organizations to try and take them down.

Cliffhanger hopes that the dynamic systems in place will work fluidly and be fun to play for the community. One side effect of this process is that players need to be locked down to certain areas of the city that Shadowrun Online takes place in for the meta plot to make sense and work. So Cliffhanger is doing just that, even going as far as giving Shadowrun Online the subtitle: “Lockdown.”

Shadowrun Online Seeks Additional Funding

Shadowrun Online was funded way back in August, to the tune of over half a million dollars, but the funding has not stopped there. If you wanted to get in on the Kickstarter action but did not for one reason or another, do I have good news for you. The blokes at Cliffhanger Productions have opened up Paypal donations to the tune (and price) of the Kickstarter promotion. Beginning at $3 and moving all the way up to $10,000, you can select any tier of donation and reap the rewards that it brings. Most tiers offer beta access, bonus gear upon the game’s launch, and a digital copy of the Campaign Mode, which runs alongside the regular service but does not include any cash shop items.

You can check out the website below. Shadowrun Online is set for a 2013 launch.

Shadowrun Online Is Not Free To Play, Adopting Guild Wars Model

Have you backed Shadowrun Online? Judging by the game’s current $100,000 raised in ten days, I’d have to guess “probably.” With 21 days left to go on the Kickstarter campaign, Cliffhanger Productions has some rather major news to announce: Shadowrun is shifting business models. While Shadowrun will still sport a free to play option with microtransactions, players will be able to pay a one time charge for the “campaign” edition, and play on a separate server where cash shop items do not cost real money (they are purchased with in-game cash).

The full game will cost $39.99 at launch, but for Kickstarter we’ll have it in a $25 dollar reward tier. Major updates (Add-on packs) will be launched every 3 to 4 months and will be priced at $14.99 USD.

Check the list below for the difference between free to play and Campaign.

Kickstarter: Shadowrun Online For Just $500,000

Hey bro, can you spot me some cash to fund Shadowrun Online? I only need ten grand for the top level Kickstarter perk. Shadowrun is a game all about gritty action and player factions warring it out over a persistent world. According to the description, players will be able to shape not just the world of Shadowrun inside of the MMO, but that decisions will also affect the future of the pen and paper game. It will be free to play (but not pay to win) and set on the Unity 3D engine similar to Cliffhanger Productions’ other MMO, Jagged Alliance Online.

Based on the pen and paper game of the same name, Shadowrun Online has taken to Kickstarter because publishers are notorious for not knowing their elbows from their, well you get the picture. Players are able to play for free, or opt into a premium subscription that offers perks including boosts in experience, rewards, and discounts at vendors.

There are 24 days left as of this publishing with about $400,000 left to go.
