Battlefront II Getting Panned Over Pay To Win Elements

Star Wars: Battlefront II just recently launched its open beta, and it is getting panned by critics and users alike over pay to win elements present in the game.

With the latest title in the Battlefront franchise, EA/Dice decided to go down the route of loot boxes as the main source of secondary income, tying abilities and crafting materials to random chance. Users have been pointing out how powerful the abilities are, such as an ability for Bobba Fett which allows him to take 100% less damage (effectively invulnerable) while flying with his jetpack, and how the expense/rarity of obtaining or crafting said abilities is encouraging players to spend a ton of money on crates in order to not be at a disadvantage. Another example includes up to 40% health increases on bombers.

Have you played the Battlefront II beta? If so, do you agree with the critics below?

So if I spend $200 on crates, open or craft all the best cards I can, then face an equally skilled opponent at the same level as me who didn’t spend money, I will likely win because I have better tools available.
IGN

To make matters worse, awarded currency comes in at a flat rate for the team regardless of performance, making it even harder to strategically earn to earn everything the game has to offer.
Kitguru

What’s even worse is that for some reason, the developers have decided that it’s okay for progression to be completely random. Unlike the previous game, regardless of which classes or even mode you’re playing, the loot box system completely dictates the overall progression.
WCCFTech

Cards are not rewarded based on the class you play, so if you’re unlucky you could end up with a bunch of garbage for a class you never touch. It also has made leveling meaningless—unlike Overwatch, there’s no crate reward for gaining a level, which is utterly bizarre.
PCWorld

Put simply, this is an exploitative and greedy system I’m surprised has made it this far. Question is, will EA let it go the whole way, or will it use a saving throw and alter the system for full release?
Eurogamer

What can I do to side-step this bad luck? Well, EA could ask me to spend real money of course. Buying as many loot crates as I need to get the abilities I want, either using crafting parts or waiting until the RNG falls on my side. People who would buy the most loot crates on day one will have a significant advantage over those players that don’t, which is depressing because the underlying game seems supremely amazing.
Windows Central

And if these loot boxes are purchasable from the get-go, yes, I can imagine that players who buy say, 50 boxes on launch day will be at an advantage over someone who is going to grind out 50 boxes over the course of the next month, even if the “opportunity” is there for them to get the same amount of crates when one pays and one doesn’t.
Forbes

There is something about the timing of Battlefront 2’s release that coincides with the ongoing debate in the gaming community regarding loot boxes. But of the games listed as “offenders” so far, Battlefront 2 is the game critics are singling out as having a particularly hostile loot system.
US Gamer

While Star Wars Battlefront 2 has yet to be released, unless the ability to purchase loot crates with cash is removed from the game, it’s difficult to see how EA could change the current system without it being pay-to-win.

SWTOR Knocks Out Massive Credit Selling Ring

swtor 2014-10-22 11-34-26-67

The Old Republic crew has busted up a credit selling ring spanning hundreds of accounts, taking billions of credits out of the economy and ensuring that Han Solo will never be able to pay back Jabba.

Last week, we took action against an entire selling ring. Over multiple weeks, we investigated and compiled evidence about a large Credit selling ring which spanned across hundreds of accounts and a variety of servers. To help thwart any possible reactions from this group, we simultaneously actioned every account in this Credit selling ring. In total, we banned hundreds of accounts and removed over nine billion credits from those accounts.

Diaries From The Old Republice: Fly Me To Coruscant

swtor 2014-10-22 11-34-26-67

Let’s get one thing out of the way: I haven’t played The Old Republic in a very, very long time. Before strongholds, before legacy, before achievements, before just about any of that stuff. I think I might have logged in once or twice after the game went free to play, but aside from that all I have to show for my pre-order is a level 26 smuggler. Those of you who have read my playthrough pieces know that I level slow, in fact even with the 12x experience boost, I can’t guarantee that I will get my current character to level 55 before the expansion hits…in December. Yea, I’m that pathetic.

For the sake of figuring out just how far I could outlevel the content, I decided to make a new character and go for a Jedi Knight. The 12x experience boost only applies to story missions, which is a good thing. At the rate that story missions are propelling me through my levels, side missions don’t offer much outside of some equipment or planetary tokens. I’ve told myself that I should be focusing on story missions for now, and that I can always come back and mop up missed side missions once my speed run is over and done with. Since each story mission provides at least one level, I am currently at level 22 running a level 16 story mission.

swtor 2014-10-23 22-17-20-11

The Old Republic is supposed to be several KOTOR sequels wrapped into one, and with that in mind I am going to play the story and enjoy it. So far the Jedi story is pretty cut and dry, but the characters are interesting and the overall plot manages to seamlessly change from planet to planet. The story is basic Star Wars: There is a sith doing bad things, and you kill him only to find out that there is a badder sith somewhere else controlling his strings. Rinse and repeat. The side missions that appear in the middle are where the creative minds at Bioware really shine through.

For instance, you arrive on Coruscant to find that not a whole lot of people particularly like you. The Republic troops on Coruscant don’t trust the Jedi because they up and left when the Jedi temple was sacked by the Sith, leaving the planet to be overrun by criminal cartels. While the resource-starved Republic was forced to withdraw its forces, a militia called the Justicars formed up to fight the various crime syndicates only to find that their efforts too would not be enough. Many have lost hope in the Republic, and some are even considering switching over to the Empire who seem more willing to stamp out crime on the planet. It seems that even in the old Republic, there is no shortage of misery caused by the inaction of the Jedi order.

One small aspect that I enjoy is the crew affection rating. In conversations, you can gain or lose affection rating with your companion based on what you say. As a jedi, my companions are better tuned toward feats of courage and compassion than malice and revenge. They call it the Jedi Order for a reason.

swtor 2014-10-22 11-35-14-34

While I wouldn’t describe my feelings as overenthusiastic, I am having some fun playing through The Old Republic. Who knows, maybe by the time the December deadline comes around, I’ll be on my second character. I doubt it.

The Old Republic Expansion Drops Talent Trees

Story2014_4_854x480

Bioware is looking to shake up The Old Republic with update 3.0, introducing the new discipline system. The discipline system will replace the skill trees, removing the idea of receiving skill points to buy powers as you level up. Instead, players will choose between three disciplines per advanced class, receiving passive and active abilities automatically as they level up rather than purchasing at skill vendors.

The goal of disciplines is to offer a level of freedom that was not available with skill trees, allowing players to level up without worrying about gimping their characters and allowing Bioware to increase the level cap without the extensive time required to balance the newly introduced skill points.

Discipline launches on December 9th alongside the Shadow of Revan expansion.

The Old Republic: Largest Story Expansion Since Hutt Cartel

Story2014_4_854x480

The latest blog post for Star Wars: The Old Republic is all about future content. Now that the Hutt Cartel has been stopped on Makeb, the Dread Masters taken down a notch, what will the Republic and Sith have to do other than continue beating the tar out of each other? The answer is a three part story arc coming called Forged Alliances. Part 1 is currently available in the form of two new Flashpoint missions that will introduce players to new allies and set the stage for future content.

Forged Alliances leads up to the next content expansion for The Old Republic, which Lead Writer Charles Boyd promises will be the largest story expansion since Rise of the Hutt Cartel.

The Old Republic No Longer Considered Canon

cathar

The Old Republic officially never happened. According to a surprise announcement by Lucasfilm, only the six films and Clone Wars show are considered canon going forward. All of the comic books, video games, and stories are now considered “legends” in the Star Wars lore, and will still be available for purchase despite no longer being part of the official canon.

“Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars”

You can find the entire blog post here. The upcoming Rebels is the first new piece of official canon to come out.

Player Housing Comes To The Old Republic

cathar

Bioware has revealed that housing is coming to The Old Republic. Not much has been revealed so far in terms of details, but the trailer below shows an apartment with a house droid, mailbox, and other effects laying around. Whether or not this has to do with Bioware’s announcement earlier this year of massive updates will have to be seen.

For now, check out the trailer embedded below.

MMOrning Shots: Blooming Good Fun

Screen Shot 2013-10-08 at 7.18.32 PM

Today’s MMOrning Shots comes to us from the upcoming JJ Abrams Star Wars film: Star Wars Episode VII: The Lens Flare Strikes Back. In reality, it is a screenshot from Bioware’s upcoming expansion to Star Wars: The Old Republic, also known as Galactic Starfighter. Releasing this winter, Galactic Starfighter is a digital expansion focusing solely on getting space flight off of its rails. This also means that there will be no new planets, no increase to the level cap, no new story missions, no new PvE content. The digital expansion will be solely focused on PvP.

On the other hand, the expansion will be available for free. Subscribers will receive access on December 3rd, 2013 with preferred members joining them on January 14, 2014, with free players tailing behind on February 4th. If all goes well, hopefully this will lead to PvE space missions ditching their rails as well. You can check out the expansion website here.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel Free For Subscribers

Active subscribers to The Old Republic who haven’t yet purchased Rise of the Hutt Cartel are in luck. In an announcement on the official website, Bioware has announced that the expansion will be free for subscribers beginning September 12th. Subscribers who already own the expansion will receive an exclusive title, “The Risen,” as well as 1050 Cartel Coins if they purchased the expansion after August 11th.
