RuneScape Updates For Diversity Sake

Alongside weekly patch notes.

It must be Monday because it’s time for another RuneScape update. As RuneScape continues its multi-month dry spell of new content, Jagex took some extra time to include a few diversity updates to the world of Gielinor. As the game is nearly 20 years old, some of its references and jokes are a little…out of date, we’ll say.

The post explains:

“We’re holding our hands up on this one – in the past, we could have done a better job of fostering diversity in game. But as they say, the best time to get started is now, and so today we’ve made the following small changes to help RuneScape be a happier and more inclusive place.”

Today’s update removes the word ‘Gypsy’ from Aris’ name, changes names of various NPCs in Karamja, changes some of the characters named Ali in the Kharidian Desert, and alters some dialogue in Kindred Spirits to remove unintended offensive statements.

RuneScape’s prior lore explained an entire town of people named Ali as being effectively the result of a big scam. Prior to the game’s events, the owner of a mansion in Pollnivneach dies and leaves his property to a man named Ali. When nobody can find Ali, people in town start legally changing their name to Ali to try and claim ownership of the mansion. After that it became a custom of the town.

The changes have prompted a fair bit of discussion on the RuneScape subreddit with mixed feelings all around.
