GDC Officially Cancelled Over Coronavirus

If nobody shows up, is there still a risk?

GDC 2020 is officially dead, a news story that shouldn’t be surprising if you’ve been keeping a tally on the number of “Diamond Partners” that have dropped out over the past week. To those not keeping count, the answer is virtually all of them.

Yes Amazon, Epic, Unreal, Facebook, Microsoft, Sony, Unity, and a bevy of other developers decided it would be in their best interest not to send an employee to a packed San Francisco conference center, risk them contracting coronavirus while mingling in a hot, poorly ventilated, packed center with tons of anonymous people with questionable hygiene, and bring it back to the offices for the other employees to enjoy.

Rather than show off the carpeting at the event center, GDC has decided instead to postpone the conference until later this summer. Presumably when the biggest risk will be the con flu.

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

Registered participants should be receiving information about refunds, and if you booked your hotel room through the GDC portal you won’t be paying any penalties. You’re on your own for cancelling that plane ticket.
