The Oprah Winfrey of video games.
Grand Theft Auto V is coming to the Epic Games Store for free, at least it is if you trust the opinion of literally everyone writing about games.
The news was broken by Gamepressure.com writer Adrian Werner who revealed that an anonymous, well informed source had sprung the leak that Grand Theft Auto V will be Epic’s free title for March 14 through the 21. Epic Games has been releasing free titles on a weekly basis for quite a while now with titles of varying prominence in terms of their publisher. Grand Theft Auto V would definitely be the biggest title to be made available for free outside of maybe Fortnite itself.
The Epic Game Store page has been mum on this week’s free title teasing a vault and implying that the game will be a big one. To my knowledge they have not been so secretive about previous free games. It would also fall in line with the Summer Game Fest that just kicked off today with Epic Games showing off the next Unreal Engine running on PS5.
Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013 and for seven years has never left the top selling monthly sales charts. The game still sells like gangbusters and the online portion rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars and still gets regularly updated with new content. Rockstar may see more income potential in tossing millions of new people into the GTA Online landscape than they do trickling out individual game sales at this point.
