Destiny 2: Beyond Light Announced For September 22

That’s 2020.

The next expansion for Destiny 2 has been announced; Beyond Light will launch on September 22, 2020. Beyond Light is supposed to mark the start of a new era in Destiny’s story and is related to player guardians toeing the line between light and dark.

Bungie’s livestream today had a rundown of Destiny’s history and a recap of the story up to today. The stream also teased expansions for the coming years with heavy hints that players might have to embrace the darkness in order to save the world. These expansions will bring players to new, never before seen areas.

It is possible that older content will be retired from the game. Destiny 2 has become massive with hundreds of systems layered on top of one another, and it is getting to the point where the updates are huge and reaching their limits (Destiny 2 is over 100 gigs already). So instead of putting another number on the box, Bungie will cycle older and less played content into a vault. This will also allow Bungie to bring content back from Destiny 1.

The topic of seasonal changes was also brought up with promises that Bungie has been paying attention to the criticisms over fear of missing out being a big hindrance to players, as well as how the game is being tweaked so players don’t feel like they are losing out on content if they don’t play at the right time. Next generation hardware will run Destiny 2 at 4k 60fps, with all player content able to upgrade to next gen hardware and bringing their content with them. Intergenerational cross-play will be available as well with cross-play potentially on the docket for 2021.

Bungie has a lot of content in the works for Destiny 2 for the coming years. Destiny 2’s next season begins today. The next expansion; Beyond Light begins September 22. Pre-orders begin today.
