Gamers Worry About Snitches With PS5 Chat Recording

And snitches get stitches.

There are a lot of things to fear in this world; spiders, super volcanoes, the election, that someone will heat up Durian fruit in the office microwave. In today’s age of technology nothing gets people’s hair sticking up quite like the prospect of being recorded and more importantly having that recording used against them at a later date. There’s a seemingly universal discomfort in having someone in the room who potentially has ulterior motives and is actively working against someone else in the group.

So the PlayStation community this week is losing its collective sanity over update 8.00 which launched on October 14 and includes some notable updates to the system. Most relevant to this article is the notice that PlayStation 5 will be able to record and submit party chat for community code of conduct violations.

The notice offers the disclaimer that you may be recorded and participating in voice chat is offering consent to being recorded.

Now it’s worth noting that Sony isn’t going around recording everyone’s party chats just in case they feel like listening to a bunch of 20-something year old dudes chat about how McDonald’s spicy nuggets are delicious. The feature is only available on PS5 (although PS4 users can join those group chats) and comes into play if someone in the group submits a report.

There does not appear to be a way to opt out of the recording.
