Because the current model isn’t great.
This week’s OId School RuneScape update has Jagex giving serious consideration to whether female avatars need a bit of cosmetic surgery. As noted in the dev blog, female characters were created by shrinking the male head leading to their eyes looking a little strange.
The standard head (which is currently used by every female player character in the game) was originally created by shrinking down the male one. This led to some intriguing issues, including the eyes merging in the centre of the face, leaving some flat, invisible geometry – making the mistake very clear to see. Ultimately, this was a weird accident… but it’s still in the game to this very day.
The company’s answer since then was to create newer female characters with eyes that are purposely separated which is great for them but doesn’t quite fix the issue for players. So Jagex is forging ahead with ideas on how to improve player avatars with the reminder that as always these changes will be polled before they are introduced to the game.
