What is this, Acquisitions Incorporated?
Now for another bedtime story about Jagex. The news that Jagex has been acquired by Carlyle Group may be confusing especially since last year we were talking about a lawsuit by China Minsheng Trust Co. Ltd. alleging that the sale to US Platinum Fortune was illegal. Whatever happened to that lawsuit? It was settled, the details not publicized. But evidently it resulted in US Platinum Fortune not acquiring Jagex.
Jagex announced today that they have been acquired by Carlyle Group, a firm with $230 billion in assets. The news comes as RuneScape celebrates its 20 year anniversary and boasts record high numbers in terms of subscribers. The first Jagex Partners published title is planned for release later this year.
Phil Mansell, CEO of Jagex, said: “I am so proud that Jagex is teaming up with Carlyle, a prestigious investment group that believes in the potential of Jagex, our vision for growth, and will support us in accelerating our multi-year growth strategy. We will continue to expand our game teams to create and deliver more great content for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. We will continue to create exciting experiences for our players, grow our global communities, build new games to expand and further explore the RuneScape universe, lend our expertise to publish third-party games from like-minded online game developers, and invest in the incredible tech and talent that powers this all.”
So does Carlyle Group own Jagex now? Do I own Jagex? Do YOU own Jagex? Why does all of this smell fishy? He said knowingly.
